On August 2, 2027, Egypt will experience one of the most spectacular astronomical events of the decade: a Total Solar Eclipse.
For travelers looking for an unforgettable place to witness this rare event, Bahariya Oasis and the Black Desert offer one of the best practical viewing locations in Egypt’s Western Desert. The area lies directly within the path of totality, with representative locations around Bahariya experiencing approximately 6 minutes and 17 seconds of totality.
The Black Desert provides a unique combination of clear desert horizons, dramatic volcanic mountains, minimal light pollution and an extraordinary natural landscape, making it an exceptional setting for experiencing and photographing the eclipse.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE?
A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, completely covering the Sun’s bright disk.
As totality approaches, daylight gradually fades. The landscape becomes dramatically darker, temperatures can drop, and the sky takes on an unusual twilight appearance.
When totality begins, the bright surface of the Sun disappears and the solar corona becomes visible around the dark silhouette of the Moon.
For a few extraordinary minutes, the desert can appear as if night has suddenly arrived in the middle of the day.
HOW LONG WILL THE ECLIPSE LAST?
The eclipse has several stages.
At a representative location in Bahariya Oasis, the partial eclipse begins at approximately 11:30 AM, with totality beginning around 12:50 PM. Totality lasts approximately 6 minutes and 17 seconds, before the partial phases continue until approximately 2:15 PM.
The exact timing and duration depend on the precise GPS coordinates of the viewing location. Moving several kilometers can change the duration of totality, so the final viewing location should be selected according to the eclipse path and final astronomical calculations.
NASA’s eclipse calculations give the maximum possible totality for the entire eclipse at approximately 6 minutes 23 seconds, with the greatest eclipse occurring in Egypt’s path. (NASA Eclipse)
WHY BAHARIYA OASIS AND THE BLACK DESERT?
Bahariya Oasis is one of the strongest choices for travelers who want to combine the 2027 Total Solar Eclipse with an authentic Egyptian desert safari.
The Black Desert is particularly attractive because it offers:
* A location inside the path of totality
* Approximately 6+ minutes of totality in the Bahariya area
* Extremely wide and unobstructed desert horizons
* Dramatic volcanic mountains and black desert landscapes
* Very low light pollution
* Excellent conditions for landscape and eclipse photography
* Easy access from Cairo compared with more remote eclipse locations
* The opportunity to combine the eclipse with the White Desert and Bahariya Oasis safari experience
A representative Bahariya location is approximately 21 km from the eclipse centerline, with around 6 minutes 17 seconds of totality. The exact duration at our camp will depend on its precise GPS coordinates. (6 Minute Solar Eclipse)

Exact eclipse timings and totality duration depend on the final GPS coordinates of the selected viewing location
The eclipse will be observed from a designated viewing location in the Black Desert area of Bahariya Oasis, selected according to eclipse calculations, accessibility, terrain, and local conditions.
Totality will last for several minutes, with the exact duration depending on the final viewing coordinates. The Bahariya area can experience approximately six minutes of totality, subject to the exact location.
The Black Desert provides a remote Western Desert setting with wide horizons and low light pollution. The final viewing location will be selected based on astronomical calculations, accessibility, terrain, and operational conditions.
The camp is designed to provide essential desert facilities, including accommodation, toilets, showers, electricity/charging facilities, lighting, dining areas, seating areas, drinking water, and camping support.
This program combines a rare Total Solar Eclipse in Egypt with a multi-day Western Desert adventure, including the Black Desert, fully equipped eclipse camping, White Desert camping, 4x4 safari, sandboarding, and desert stargazing.
